Global Leaders Gather at Smart City Summit & Expo 2024 to Drive Digital and Green Transformation

Amidst the backdrop of unprecedented global challenges ranging from economic crises to climate emergencies, the 11th Smart City Summit & Expo (SCSE) opened its doors with a resolute commitment to catalyzing digital and green transformation. Hosted in Taipei, Taiwan, the summit brought together a diverse array of international leaders, innovators, and policymakers to explore innovative solutions for building smarter, more sustainable cities.

The theme of the exhibition, “Digital and Green Transformation,” resonated deeply with the pressing issues facing the world today. Against the backdrop of a tumultuous global landscape marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, geopolitical tensions, and climate change-induced disasters, the imperative for transformative action has never been clearer.

In his opening remarks, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres underscored the urgency of the climate crisis, declaring the dawn of the “Global boiling” era. With extreme weather events wreaking havoc across continents and the specter of global warming looming large, the imperative for decisive action on climate change has never been more urgent.

The exhibition hall buzzed with activity as visitors explored a myriad of innovative solutions spanning smart manufacturing, energy, transportation, healthcare, and governance. Leveraging cutting-edge technologies such as 5G, Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and cloud computing, these solutions showcased the potential of digitalization to drive sustainable development and combat climate change.

One of the highlights of the summit is the Net Zero City Exhibition, which showcases government initiatives and achievements towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. From policy visions to green finance plans and advanced technology solutions, the exhibition provided a comprehensive overview of the pathway towards a carbon-neutral future.

The summit also serves as a platform for international collaboration, with over 2,000 overseas visitors expected to participate in the exhibition activities. Municipal delegations, telecommunications operators, solution providers, and experts from around the world converged to exchange ideas, forge partnerships, and explore avenues for collaboration in driving smart and sustainable urban development.

During a global press conference following the exciting opening ceremony, leaders from Taiwan, the United States, and the Czech Republic shared their insights on the significance of the summit and the role of smart city initiatives in addressing global challenges.

Mr. Jason Chen, Chairman of the Taiwan Smart City Solutions Alliance, emphasized the role of ICT solutions in driving net-zero emissions and the importance of government support in accelerating innovation and adoption.

Deputy Mayor Charles Lin of Kaohsiung City Government highlighted Taiwan’s leadership in ICT hardware and underscored the role of smart city initiatives in delivering tangible benefits for citizens and society.

Mr. Marc Elrich, County Executive of Montgomery County, Maryland, emphasized the transformative potential of the solutions showcased at SCSE and stressed the urgency of action in the face of escalating climate risks.

Mr. Vitezslav Schrek, President of Vysočina Region, Czech Republic, commended the exhibition for its eye-opening technologies and stressed the importance of international collaboration in addressing shared challenges.

Mr. David Golding, Head of Global Innovation Partnerships at Innovate UK, underscored the role of startups in driving smart city initiatives and highlighted the importance of collaboration in tackling global challenges.

SCSE continues to inspire renewed commitment to harnessing the power of digitalization for sustainable urban development. With the world at a crossroads, the Smart City Summit & Expo serves as a beacon of hope, demonstrating the transformative potential of collective action in building a more resilient, equitable, and sustainable future.
